San Basilio de Palenque, the first ‘free town’ in the Americas, declared by UNESCO as a ‘Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity’ in 2005.
A place where slaves ceased to be slaves and sang and danced to the sounds of the drums.In this small village, African language, dance and cultural traditions are strongly preserved.
In the main square you will find a beautiful reminder of Benkos Biohó, the foundational hero of the village.
